2022 Scholarship Recipients
The goal of the HCCNC Scholarship Program is to support student leaders as role models for the Hawai‘i community. This year we are pleased to support three outstanding students!
Congratulations to Kamryn Shigemoto, Montana Lagat, and Kaylee Volner, recipients of the 2022 HCCNC Scholarship!
Kamryn shigemoto
Kamryn Shigemoto is a 2022 graduate of Mililani High School and will be attending Sonoma State University with plans of pursuing a degree in electrical engineering. Her love for STEM has grown from her experience with robotics and would like to continue on this path to learn how to create and implement creative solutions to electrical problems that are present in the community. Throughout high school, she was involved with various service clubs that gave her numerous opportunities to be involved and give back to the community. She was a member of Interact Club, Leo Club, National Honor Society, and a subcommittee leader for the Blood Drive Committee. In addition, she played club soccer and multiple sports in high school including cross country, soccer, and track. In her senior year, I was a team captain for the soccer team and was named the All-OIA West Player of the Year. This wide range of experiences left her with a desire to give back to the community she was raised in and aspires in college to discover innovative ways to apply what she learns to leave a positive impact on the community.
Montana Lagat
Montana Lagat is a graduating senior at Kamehameha Schools Hawaii. She will attend Stanford University this fall and plans to major in biochemistry. She has been part of my school’s band program since sixth grade, participated in varsity air riflery, and became a member of the National Honor Society throughout my high school career. To further explore her interest in cancer biology, she recently completed an internship at the University of Hawaii at Hilo during which she conducted research to investigate the effect of Native Hawaiian ʻōlena (Curcuma longa) extract on the proliferation of cancerous neuroblastoma cells. In addition to supporting the physical health of her community, she also demonstrated a commitment to promoting mental health as well. Last year, she participated in the Youth Action Alliance Program hosted by the Pacific & Asian Affairs Council. Throughout the program, she collaborated with other teens in Hawaii to address the mental health crisis by hosting several webinars to increase accessibility to mental health resources for local youth. After college, she hopes to work in the pharmaceutical industry and give back to my community by leveraging her passion for science to engineer new solutions to existing and rising medical concerns in Hawaii.
kaylee volner
Kaylee Volner is a 2022 graduate of Seabury Hall and will attend Santa Clara University in the fall. She is a biochemistry major and will run Cross Country and Track for the Santa Clara Broncos. Throughout high school Kaylee was a member of the Student Council, HOSA, National Honor Society, and the Cross Country and Track and Field teams. Kaylee was team captain of both the Cross Country and Track and Field Teams and is the 2022 HHSAA 3,000 Meters Track and Field State Champion. Kaylee was named the 2021-2022 Maui Interscholastic League Athlete of the Year and the 2021-2022 Hawaii Gatorade Cross Country Athlete of the year. Kaylee aspires to become a pharmacist and has volunteered her time as an intern at Mauliola Pharmacy, a locally owned pharmacy dedicated to community-based health care. Through interning at Mauliola Pharmacy, she understood the importance of pharmacists in our community, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Health care is such an important aspect of life and by becoming a pharmacist, Kaylee hopes to create a positive impact on our Maui community, making sure everyone gets the care they deserve to live a healthy and prosperous life.
