2012 Scholarship Recipients
The goal of the HCCNC Scholarship Program is to support student leaders as role models for the Hawai`i community. The Scholarship Program is aimed at strengthening the pipeline of Bay Area college-bound students and ensuring retention so that more students obtain their degrees. We seek to support qualified kama`aina, and assist them in making the transition from high school to college, and from Hawai`i to the mainland.
This year we are pleased to support three outstanding students! Congratulations to Jared Hara, Vivica Vy Nguyen, and Kryslin Nishibun, recipients of the 2012 HCCNC Scholarship!
jared hara
Jared Hara, an Iolani School graduate from Waipahu, is currently a sophomore double majoring in Bioengineering and Economics at Santa Clara University. He is highly motivated in his involvement in academics, community service, athletics, and student life. He currently studies welfare programs as a research assistant at Santa Clara, and spends his summers at the Queen’s Medical Center both researching and volunteering. Jared is also a leader in numerous student organizations on campus such as the Hawaii Club, Jiu Jitsu Club, Pre-Health Club, and more. After graduating from Santa Clara, Jared hopes to attend medical school and eventually work in Hawaii as a physician. He seeks to improve the health care system in Hawaii with an understanding of both the life sciences and business. Jared is passionate about giving back to the community and hopes to tackle growing socioeconomic disparities.
Vivica vy nguyen
Vivica Vy Nguyen was born in Vietnam but moved to Honolulu at the age of 6. Since then, she had a deep passion for the Hawaiian culture, joining a halau at the age of ten, participating in school Polynesian clubs, and also performing hula at hospitals and nursing homes around Oahu. While highly involved as a hula dancer in high school, Vivica also spend much of her time playing tennis and being part of student government. With these experiences and the support of her ohana, she was able to graduate from Kaimuki High School as a valedictorian. She is now a freshman at the University of San Francisco, majoring in nursing. It have been quite a tough ride for Vivica to get to where she is, but those struggles have motivated her to dedicate her life to service and caring for those in need. She enjoys volunteering at clinics and hopes that one day she will become a nurse who will not only save lives, but also improve the communities.
Kryslin nishibun
Kryslin Nishibun, a St. Andrew’s Priory graduate from Mililani, is a sophomore at Mills College studying Biopsychology. Aside from being at the top of her class, Kryslin holds a teaching assistant position and is active in school clubs. She is also planning to pursue research in the psychology department in the upcoming school year. Following her undergraduate education, Kryslin hopes to attend the University of Hawaii’s John A. Burns School of Medicine and to specialize in women’s reproductive health thereafter. Having recognized the disparities in the local health care system, Kryslin intends to offer medical assistance to individuals in Hawaii who would otherwise be unable to afford it.
