2014 Scholarship Recipients

The goal of the HCCNC Scholarship Program is to support student leaders as role models for the Hawai‘i community. The Scholarship Program is aimed at strengthening the pipeline of Bay Area college-bound students and ensuring retention so that more students obtain their degrees.  We seek to support qualified kama‘āina, and assist them in making the transition from high school to college, and from Hawai‘i to the mainland.

This year we are pleased to support three outstanding students!  Congratulations to Maluhia Stark-Kinimaka, Gina McGuire, and Alyssa Yee, recipients of the 2014 HCCNC Scholarship!

Maluhia Stark-Kinimaka

Maluhia Stark-Kinimaka was born in Līhu‘e, Kaua‘i in 1996.  She graduated from Kapa‘a High School in Kapa‘a, Kaua‘i, as part of the class of 2014. She was raised in the Anahola Hawaiian Homelands where she learned early on the values of a small Hawaiian community. In the Fall, she will be attending Stanford University as a Freshman with hopes to study engineering. She has a strong passion for learning as well as assisting those around her. When she’s not in school, she loves surfing, swimming, singing, and working with volunteer organizations. She hopes to one day return to Hawai‘i in order to use her vocational skills to benefit her island community.

Gina mcGuire

Gina McGuire is from the island of Hawai‘i and is currently a freshman at Stanford University.  She grew up surrounded by the ocean.  The beauty and power of the sea inspires her to pursue a career in international marine conservation, to share her love for the ocean with the world to create a global community of preservation.  She is planning to major in International Relations and co-term with a masters in Stanford’s Anthropology Ecology Track.  She loves volunteering with the NOAA Marine Debris Program and National Marine Sanctuaries as well as spending time outdoors with her horse and dogs. She thanks the HCCNC for helping her make her dreams come true.

Alyssa yee

Alyssa Yee attended Punahou School, beginning in the 6th grade, and graduated in 2014. Alyssa will be attending Stanford University in the Fall and hopes to study Business Administration or Management. She has a passion for music and serving others, and plans to combine these interests by spreading her appreciation for music with the California community.  Alyssa also enjoys reading, spending time with family, running and exploring the outdoors. She hopes to utilize the experience she will gain in college to serve as a role model for youth in her community and share her love for learning and the importance of higher education with them.
