Far removed from its ancestral home, can hula survive in unlikely places? Nā Lei Hulu says yes, emphatically. Whether in the dusty plains of Black Rock Desert or the infamous yard of San Quentin State Prison - hula thrives. Nā Lei Hulu's newest production takes us not just to the desert and the prison, but to the streets of New York City and the venerated stage of the San Francisco Opera House, offering those in the audience to witness an authentic expression of culture that is inclusive and beguiling. Joining Nā Lei Hulu will be Hōkū Hanohano Award winners Kūpaoa as well as Kahulanui, winner of this year's Hōkū for Jazz Album of the Year. This Hawaiian big-band orchestra will set the stage afire with a ferocious blast of swinging Hawaiian jazz and Lindyhopping hula dancers. I MUA - Hula in Unusual Places is a vibrant reminder of how tradition and innovation can coexist in surprising and meaningful ways.
